We’ve just seen off the challenge of 2018, so what better time could there be to reflect on the best, worst, or just the most interesting films of the year.

Discussion

In no particular order, some of the films we (or some fraction of us) liked were Coco, Annihilation, Utøya 22 July, First Man, Isle of Dogs, Widows, Mandy, Faces Places, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Bohemian Rhapsody, Ant-man and the Wasp, Sorry To Bother You, I, Tonya, A Fantastic Woman, Three Billboards Outside Of Ebbing Missouri, The Breadwinner, and Mary and the Witch’s Flower.

Some interesting, recommend, but in some way flawed films were Apostasy, First Reformed, The Other Side of the Wind, and They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead.

A few disappointments – not necessarily bad films, just ones we hoped for more from – were You Were Never Really Here, Lady Bird, Zama, The Post, Phantom Thread, The Shape Of Water, and The Night Comes For Us.

Some out and out clunkers were Mute, Flavors of Youth, The Cloverfield Paradox, A Quiet Place, Halloween, Apostle, and special mention goes to Hereditary, which we do not remotely understand y’all’s opinions of.
